Kazzthespazz's Recycled Fashion Creations

Tuesday, August 6, 2013

Readers, I'd like to introduce you to the work of Kazzthespazz and her many sewing talents, particularly within the recycled fashion genre.

Kazz, a passionate self-taught designer / dressmaker and graphic designer, also living in Melbourne, Australia, has been writing and documenting her work on her blog Kazzthespazz since 2008.

I found out about Kazz through a recent Australian blog event; Voices of 2013, in which she reached the competition finals within the creative/home category.

Kazz's sewing skills are outstanding, her creations incredibly unique, her eclectic style filled with colour, pattern and detail make her stand out from the rest.

Clear examples of her work can be seen in her 2012 gallery, when she challenged herself to sew a garment a week for a year (wow).

Here is just a snippet:

The following recently completed sewing projects highlight Kazz's creative diversity, innovation and resourcefulness:

Recycled Plastic Trench Coat

You may be familiar with the check print plastic Kazz used to make her jacket, similar to that found laundry bags sold around the world, because that is exactly the material Kazz used to create her unique take on a winter raincoat.

Using her go-to trench coat pattern (Vogue 2449), and re-purposing 7 plastic laundry bags to create  her final project.

"7 bags sounds excessive but once you unpick the basting stitch and remove the black trim and handles you are really only left with a metre and a half of the material to play with and you have to double that, not forgetting too that you also need to make sure the plaid matches up everywhere." Kazz

Recycled Denim Hats

Kazz's recent sewing projects include hats made from jeans.  Each hat is different from the next, using the majority of the jean fabric only leaving behind the seams, zip and some small denim scraps, therefore resulting in minimal wastage.

Kazz's recycled jean hats, along with some of her other fashion creations, are available to buy in her etsy store Warm Leatherette.

"Sometimes people don’t want to part with their favourite jeans especially after learning that they’re no longer fashionably acceptable to wear under your muffin top, under your butt or up around your armpits so, turning them into a hat makes sense instead of adding to landfill."

"Each hat is lined and like a well-worn pair of jeans I can only imagine that over time the hat will look and feel just like your favourite pair of jeans."  Kazz

Do follow Kazzthespazz, I am sure you'll be impressed as I am by her sewing creations and unique take on fashion.

I love Kazzs blog! What'snot to love? Sewing, recycling, unique, talented!

Awesome refashions. At the airport recently, one of these laundry bags was going around the baggage carousel. As soon as the owner grabbed the handle....the bag broke. I think that it is an excellent idea turning these cheap bags into durable jackets. Also love the quirky denim caps.
