Fashion Less Waste 2012: Deep Oceans

Tuesday, January 10, 2012

The Australian Museum, Sydney, Australia, has commenced its annual fashion competition; Fashion Less Waste 2012, which aims to encourage a more sustainable fashion industry, to help fashion a less wasteful world.

This years theme will be "Deep Oceans"

The instructions are to design and make an outfit that is entirely, or mostly, made from materials that were originally bought and used for a non-clothing purpose. For example, discarded DVDs, video or audio tape, chicken wire, fly screen, wall paper, tea towels, kitchenware, cutlery, plastic bags, hessian bags, office supplies, polystyrene packing, or car seat belts. There are two categories, Secondary School (Years 7 to 12) and Open. Please see the competition terms and conditions.

Last year I entered the Fashion Less Waste 2011 competition myself, in an outfit inspired by the birds of paradise. Whilst I did not make it to the finals, there were some wonderful, and really inspiring entries, you can see the finalists talent here.

I am yet to decide if I will enter this year's competition, but if I do, here is some inspiration for the theme "Deep Ocean"

This sounds amazing and the theme gives a lot to work with.
I used to enter into the Worn Art competition in Broome and it was always so much fun.

Interesting idea, at our Fashion Design Institute we teach students how to use different materials, maybe plastic bags and office supplies should be in the syllabus.
