With a subtle choice of colour however, tie dye may be considered more on the bohemian side than hippie, and as Sarah Michelle Gellar shows us at the recent 2012 Golden Globes, tie dye can be glamorous too.

Would you care for a little tie dye yourself? You could purchase tie dye clothing retail...
...but you'd be better off with a DIY tie dye experiment, using existing garments from your wardrobe or finding some thrifty clothing pieces to play with.
On my recent visit to the trash and treasure market, I picked up a lightweight cotton top for a $1, stained on the front, perfect for tie dye.

This is not my first dye attempt, and I still have Teal RIT dye left over.
I scrunched up my top into a ball, used t-shirt yarn* to hold in place
*t-shirt yarn is made from old t-shirts, I have a heap of it around the house and use it in replace of elastic bands, there is a how-to tutorial here

Dunk in boiled hot water and RIT dye, and leave for a few hours.

I love tie dye! I haven't had a go a tie dying for years.
No way dying should be left in 60s! I use it for upcycling, there is so many quality clothes throwed away just because of one stain or discolouring... I love it, especially the variety of uses and patterns one can make. I love the first pics - wouldn't mind to be there now! :)
Good reading, Erica, thanks!
I have about four things that I can't donate because of stains (that I missed when I bought them second hand!!) I think tie dye may be the answer. Where's the best place to buy RIT?
@I Love To Op Shop Spotlight sell RIT Dye!
Great job! I love that you bought a blouse with a small stain on it to save it with tie-dye. The outcome is super.
Awesome!! I love it! Thanks for the tutorial, I always thought tie dying was hard, but you've proven me wrong!
I have several tie dye pieces in my wardrobe, keep I say!

Tie dying is always a bit of an adventure, as you can't predict the exact outcome. I've always enjoyed the look of it and think it will always have a place in the fashion world.
I love tie dye! I actually have a pair of tie dye jeans (like Fergie's) floating around somewhere that I haven't worn in ages. This reminds me that I need to wear them more!
Wow what a beautiful shade of blue Erica!!! You have done a glorious job of making a so-so old top into a real knock-out! (I'm wearing my blue kimono from you as I type this - in fact, I practically LIVE in it!) xoxo
Great way to use a stained shirt! Subtle tie dye can look great. I still shy away from it because people think I'm a hippy because of my name already! But I love dyeing overall, and def ombre effects :)
Great use of a stained shirt! Subtle tie dye can be fab. I tend to stay away from it, as people already think I'm a hippy because of my name. But I love an overall dye or ombre effect!
