Denim Cargo Skirt Refashion

Saturday, January 7, 2012

My first refashion of 2012; a cargo denim skirt. I picked up an ankle length denim skirt from an op shop in Welshpool for $3. The length needed to go, too bulky and boxy.

I cut off the length to the knee, but instead of a boring hem, I added a little colour. Readers, I am not sure if you'll recognise the skirt's new trim?

A belt in a former life, given to me by fellow blogger Desiree, as part of our Christmas charity shop swap. Spotted in the photograph of my parcel below, right at the front.

I've stitched the belt to the bottom trim of my skirt, which adds character and colour. I hadn't realised until wearing both together, that my skirt matches my new favourite sandals!

A Christmas gift from my brother, a pair of repurposed Hmong textile gladiator sandals, handcrafted in Thailand, purchased through Siamese Dream Design, aren't they the best? I've worn my sandals every day, and so many people comment on them.

Thrifted bag, also given to me as part of my swap package from Desiree, I love it!

But readers, what has happened to my head? There I am..

I'm wearing a necklace made from a spoon, created by Greg Mann Jewellery. My son loves it!

Lastly, I put the discarded denim skirt fabric to use, making a padded case for my iPad. I've blogged about it on Recycled Sewing, here is a picture

My fashion budget for 2012 is now down to $297. ($3 for the skirt, the rest is gifted)

brilliant work on the denim skirt -- and the iPad case you fashioned from the remains! : >

Inspired by your recent discussion, I've started my 2012 clothing spend record - £11 so far but £7 of that was a bra so not sure if I should count that.

you are so resourceful Erica! I like your skirt, now it looks so much cuter with the trimmings. I like the sandals too, the colors and pattern are so ethnic chic. Nice ipad case, nothing is wasted, well done!

Your skirt is darling. I never would have thought to use a belt at the hem. Great idea.

Thanks so much for your comments! I love these sandals, what are the soles like? Are they comfy? I would love you advice on Australia please! I am thinking of settling somewhere to work for a while, so any suggestions you have would be great!! My email is if you do!
