Blue dress refashion with obi belt

Wednesday, September 7, 2011

The gift of a gorgeous two-tone blue cotton dress, a beautiful Indian fabric, almost silky to the eye. But, 9 months later, the dress remains unworn, for its fit did not flatter. Over the last few days, I've spent a bit of time giving this little number a facelift.

Before

The length had to go, but I put the cut-away fabric to good use by making an Obi Belt from the remaining material, using a youtube tutorial How to Make an Obi Belt, and added ruffle sleeves to each arm hole.

Work In Progress

Using existing dress to size

Obi Belt and arm ruffles in the making

ruffles pinned to arm holes

I just stopped by from Thriftaholics Weekly - amazing work! The "after" looks like a completely different dress. The sleeves are my favorite part!

It's definitely a winner - well done!
Can I suggest some small bust darts from under the arms across? In the picture it looks like you've got a little extra fabric bunched up around your chest. But if it's not a problem in real life, don't worry about it. : )

@stitchybritt Good observation, I'll look into this. There are some darts already there from the existing shape, but perhaps I could extend them now I have taken it in. Thank you!
